Saturday 29 September was seen as a day that would prove who is king of crowd pulling between Mbare born chanters Soul Jah Love and Seh Calaz.

The two announced the same date for their albums launch events. Seh Calaz was dropping his ‘Ndaqatumwa‘ album at Shawasha grounds in Mbare with a free event titled Sadaka part 2, while his rival Soul Jah Love was also dropping his album ‘Naka Dhula Dhaka‘, an album titled after a term he coined as a short for ‘Zvinonaka zvinodhura, zvinodhaka‘ shona term in lose meaning nice things are expensive and can get you high. Some have went on to say it is a form of substance that gets you high and is expensive. His album was launched at Takashinga Sports Club in Highfields.

The crown for crowd pulling went to the King of Disses, Boss Yala as Seh Calaz is affectionately known by his fans. However his show was made free of entrance compared to Soul Jah Love’s which costed $5 for a general admission.

Soul Jah Love’s event was also marred with flaws which became clear when he failed to appear on time to take his set leaving fans frustrated. This resulted in some rowdy characters throwing cans at some youngsters performing.

Chibaba as Soul Jah Love is also known later appeared to take the stage aroung 2am. Chanting a few of his old songs before dropping some tunes from his new album.

Songs from his new album ‘Naka Dhula Dhaka’ were not received well by some of his fan base who were seen leaving the crowd as he performed his new tracks.

Seh Calaz on the other side was having a blast performing some of his old hits while also taking a jab at Soul Jah Love. He also complained about some of his haters trying to sabotage his event by alerting officials of the cholera hazard associated with hosting such an event.

So at the end of the day Seh Calaz managed to pull a crowd compared to Soul Jah Love but more because it was free than anything. It still remains to be seen who the actual crowd puller is when they host events at par with the other!

Songstress Bounty Lisa, who was recently assaulted by her husband, Soul Jah Love, says she will only consider giving the controversial Zimdancehall star a second chance once he genuinely apologises and seeks help to overcome his worsening drug addiction.

Early this week, Soul Jah Love battered his wife after accusing her of being impregnated by an unnamed Harare man who supplies the Pamamonya Ipapo hit-maker with hard drugs.

After Bounty Lisa, who claims she was attacked with fists and an iron bar, reported the assault at Rhodesville Police Station in Harare on Wednesday, the Zimdancehall songstress and Soul Jah Love were subjected to a lengthy counselling session.

The battered and bruised songstress, though, is not convinced that Soul Jah Love is ready for genuine change.

“Takapihwa counselling asi pari zvino handifungi kuti Soul Jah Love anokodzera kuti tidzokerane nokuti zvakaita kuti tinetsane hazvisati zvachinja.(We received some counselling but at this point I don’t think Soul Jah Love is ready to be given a second chance because nothing has changed yet,” said Bounty Lisa.

She added that the situation had been complicated further by the fact that the Zimdancehall star had not owned up to the harm he inflicted on her.

“Akangoti sorry asvika kuRhodesville Police Station because aitya kusungwa but later akataridza kuti haasati achinja. Ari kuda kuti ini nditi sorry but how can I say sorry ndisina kumukanganisira uye achindpomera mhosva dzandisingazivi. (Soul Jah Love wants me to say sorry to him for offences that I never committed but I won’t do that.)

“Funny enough, achikungoti ndinozivana nevakomana vake vemadrugs which is very funny. Ndakangovaona vakomana vacho kaviri paakaenda neni ikoko achida kutenga madrugs. Dambudziko rake nderekuti haasi kuyeuka zvizere zvese zvakaitika nenyaya yemadrugs. (Soul Jah Love still insists that I have a relationship with the guys who supply him with drugs. He is hallucinating because of the drugs),” said Bounty Lisa.

Despite being a victim of Soul Jah Love’s brutality, Bounty Lisa has not given up on the Conquering Family boss.

“Anoda kubatsirwa chete kuti asiye madrugs. He can make it but zvinoda kuti asimbe. Kucounselling Soul Jah Love akaudzwa kuti aende for rehabilitation asi iye akati acharwisa drug problem ari kumba. Kucounselling vakanditi ndimubatsire kutsvaga madoctors vanokwanisa kuti arege madrugs. (Soul Jah Love needs help so that he can quit drugs. During the counselling session it was recommended that he should seek medical help but he insisted that he would beat the drug problem at home. I was also asked to help him by identifying doctors who can assist him quit the drug habit. I am prepared to help him),” said the Zimdancehall songstress.

Bounty Lisa added that her estranged husband has no choice but to chart a new course.

“Ndinoda kuti achinje nokuti akarega upenyu hwake huchaoma. Anofanira kubvuma kubatsirwa nemadoctor ane ruzivo rwokukunda zvemadrugs. Ini naye tinokwanisa chete kutaura neremangwana edu kana ataridza kuti achinja zvechokwadi. (I really want Soul Jah Love to reform for the better because the drug problem will plunge his life into deeper problems. I will only discuss our future with him once he shows that he has really changed for the better),” said the embattled songstress. DailyNews

Last year (2017) almost came to an end without the much anticipated Zimdancehall awards. Usually hosted annually by its founder Phineas Mushayi and company.

Just like the previous years fans hoped it would come in the first quarter, but when that didn’t happen questions started pouring in, ‘are we having any ceremony this year?’ A fake list came out which had people hyped but was later dismissed by the usual hosts of the event (Phineas and co.).

Then when the year was about to close, the Zimdancehall awards patron, Oscar Pambuka announced that he was rescuing the annual ceremony as his last act as the patron.

The event sure came to pass, but as reports show, it was marred with confusion and controversy! Most people we talked to found the award show controversial, some sighting the best promoter award which was given to Chipaz promotions, who last promoted a dancehall artist.. (kudhara). Others even complained of the lack of the red carpet glamour at the event and poor organization.

These could as well be labelled as some mishaps, which could have been caused by Oscar Pambuka and Co being first time hosts. However, the big question is, if artists are not really benefiting financially from these awards, why bother hosting such an event?

Answers from King And Queen of Zimdancehall?

We managed to get in touch with two of the biggest winners of the night, the King of Zimdancehall award winner, Soul Jah Love and the Queen of Zimdancehall award winner Queen Kadjah.

Both artists showed appreciation for the award even though they do not carry any financial benefit.

According to Soul Jah Love, whats important is the recognition of being King. “Tinotambira zviripo hatitarisire kupihwa zvihombe ipo pasina zviripo. Tinotenda vaPambuka nezvavakatipa chakakosha kuti vazive kuti ndini mambo weZimdancehall.

We receive what is there, we don’t look for much when there is little. We thank [Oscar] Pambuka for it, what important is that they know I am the King of Zimdancehall.

Soul Jah Love managed to mesmerize the Zimdancehall fraternity last year after dropping the chart topping single Pamamonya Ipapo, which became an anthem at many events countrywide. He was going against Kinnah, Winky D, Killer T and Seh Calaz.

Another big winner was the new rising star, Kadjah real name Tariro Kadandara who shot up after dropping Nda Believer featuring Shinsoman. She is also popular for her energetic live performances.

Kadjah was crowned Queen of Zimdancehall 2017 at the award ceremony held in Harare. “I am proud to be standing among giants who have walked this path before me and who have shown with their achievements that there’s no limit to what women can accomplish if they believe in themselves.”

“I would like to thank them for showing female artists that the glass ceiling has been broken.” She said.

So to answer our question, why bother?

A few local awards have a big financial benefit on the winner, even the ZIMA (Zimbabwe Music Awards) have been criticized a number of times for having no financial reward to the artists.

Even though we hope to see a better and much organized Zimdancehall awards next time, the recognition an artist receive might go a long way in making the genre and the artist better.

Not to be left out in the current frenzy of a new Head of State, President Mnangagwa is Soul Jah Love who has dedicated a whole song to ‘Garwe/Crocodile’ as the President is known.

The song produced by DKT also serves as a diss to other disgraced Zanu-PF officials such as Chombo and Chihuri, whilst he thanked the army and General Chiwenga for a job well done.

Is it such a bad idea? Soul Jah Love for the state house? The dancehall chanter will indeed be standing among the greats ‘Pamamonya Ipapo.’

As Zimbabweans are heading to the polls sometime next year a new page has emerged titled ‘Soul Jah Love for President 2018.‘ Yeah when I saw it I was shocked too, wtf is Souljah Love actually vying for the biggest office in the land? Its one of those unthinkable ideas, but surprise surprise, somebody actually did thought of it.

I remember when we were heading towards the 2008 elections and Winky D was the darling of the music industry (surprise: he still is!), he had just dropped songs like Godo which had easily become anthems among the youth, then some people started suggesting that he run for office.

We must be in the same wave with Soul Jah Love here, still shining in the glory of his biggest song of the year, ‘Pamamonya Ipapo‘ some people seem to believe he should run for president. For a person who hasn’t been good at running his own brand seeing as he has been at loggerheads with promoters a lot, the idea of running the country should be terrifying, right?

Well, they say Zimbabwe is a democracy so nothing should stop the dancehall chanter if he chooses to follow the path, well nothing except his age! According to the Zimbabwean constitution (pdf) one should be at least forty years to be elected as president or vice president of the country. Goodbye dreams, Chibaba, born November 22 1989 is only 27!

Its also worth noting that the page already has some 400 likes, but it doesnt seem much political, so maybe its just an idea for fun! Please don’t play with that?!

We have reached out to Soul Jah Love’s management and hope to update this piece, with their piece of information.

If you are not in the know how at least you are in the luck, I am here to update you. So today 14 October is Seh Calaz birthday bash, the much hyped Sadaka featuring Jamaican star Turbulence which is happening at the Mbare Netball Complex.

The flier which was used to market the event features a lot of other Zimdancehall artists including Soul Jah Love.

Here comes the trouble… Some of the artists on the fliers and posters advertised were not actually booked. For example Soul Jah Love was included according to Seh Calaz’s management as “an act of brotherhood.

The statement released by King George, Seh Calaz’s manager goes on to expose how Seh Calaz has been included on Soul Jah Love’s gigs without consulting his management and “Seh Calaz has been decent enough to attend without even asking for payment.”

I get it Zimdancehall is actually a brotherhood thing, but the way Zimdancehall artists override their managers seems a lot unprofessional the more you look at it. This is probably the reason why artists like Jah Love have been involved in double bookings which ended up hurting the fans who had parted ways with their hard earned dollars.

Seh Calaz’s management was disappointed because Soul Jah Love’s management headed by Ben Nyandoro of Jive Zimbabwe had contacted the Sadaka organizers and threatened them with legal action. It is understandable that one would be shaken off by such a move especially if you had performed at their gigs for free.

Performing for free at another artist’s show is not the problem, we knew this already that its Zimdancehall’s way of helping each other, but as professional artists managers should be part of the process. Now you know why Winky D is never at these birthday bashes, right?

In the full statement below Seh Calaz ended up severing ties with the ‘Pamamonya Ipapo‘ singer telling them, “do not come and in future never consider us for any of your events.”

To Stakeholders & Fans

We would like to inform all stakeholders and especially fans that Soul Jah Love will not perform at the Sadaka Birthday Bash slated for this Saturday,October 14th 2017.This is because we have not reached an amicable agreement with the artist.

For the avoidance of doubt, having Soul Jah Love on the line up was an act of brotherhood and whatever discussions were neccesary were to be handled by Seh Calaz and Soul Jah Love.Seh Calaz has been on tour to Australia and only arrived yesterday. The two come a long way before the emergence of some overzealous mafikizolo managers.

Soul Jah Love has put Seh Calaz on posters for basically all his launches and birthday bashes without even consulting with Seh Calaz or his management and Seh Calaz has been decent enough to attend without even asking for payment.

It came as a surprise therefore that Soul Jah Love’s management contacted the promoters of the Sadaka bash yesterday with a threat for legal action because Soul Jah Love was on the poster.

While it is obvious they are acting under his instruction , we find this kind of behaviour to be very hypocritical coming from an artist who is known for missing confirmed and booked shows. As they say, a lizard in Zimbabwe can not be a crocodile in London. While trying to portray a semblance of order and pseudo professionalism,we urge his management to clean their house first. It is a public secret that they have not appeared at booked shows and caused violence and vandalism of property as a result. It is against this background that we make this public announcement to avoid any such incidents.

As already alluded to earlier,we can’t count the number of times we have been on their event posters and actually turned up. We do this in the spirit of brotherhood which unfortunately the other side does not want to reciprocate but choose to grandstand for whatever reason. So here is the message to them:Its ok,do not come and in future never consider us for any of your events. We have done our part several times to be good brothers but it seems you think we can do without each other based on your uncouth behaviour and that’s fine with us. The Sadaka bash will go ahead and will be a success all the same.

Not all the songs are our favorites here, because we feel the dancehall legend could have done better, but its definitely a banger to give an ear to.

The album feaures songs like, Chigayo, Ndofirapo, Yeke yeke, Marangwanda, Pindirai, Ndambakuudzwa, Kwayedza and more.
