The buzz has taken over the local dancehall fraternity after Chronicles published that Winky D is ranked in the top 10 Best Dancehall Artists of all time above Sean Paul and Sizzla Kalonji (really?).

Before we go any further a disclaimer please, I love Winky D and I would rank him among the best local dancehall artists or even number 1 all things considered. But the truth however is I wouldnt go all the way to believe that the local chanter is better than Sean Paul or dancehall-reggae don dadas like Sizzla (c’mon!).

Here Goes The Truth!

The post about Winky D ranking top of the Ranker list was first published last year by an online blog here. At this time Winky was number 1 above even Vybz Kartel, Bennie Man or Mavado!

There is no doubt Winky has enough talent to stand against these guys but is he already better than them all things considered? Lets see, as the least is titled Best Dancehall Artists of All Time where was Winky D when the likes of Beenie Man started their dancehall journey in the 80s or when he produced the 90s hit ‘Healing’ with Lady Saw? Zim-Dancehall was not a thing by this time, sungura and other locally brewed genres were in play by the time, so how can we say he is better than them all time?

Okay that one didnt convince you right? How many international awards Winky D has, how many international shows has he done. Sean Paul has won many international awards including the prestigious Grammy Award and the MTV Music Award. He has toured many countries including countries in Europe, Africa and America.

In terms of sales, Sean Paul has been ranked by Billboard as the best selling dancehall artist of all time and yet is still ranked below Winky D.

So how come Winky D is still leading all things considered? The truth is is a website ranking system that allows people to rank things they are interested in. No one sits down to come up with the list anyone can add an item to be ranked and people vote with an up or down.

The system has been popularized among locals by posts as these which has propelled Zimbabweans to continue voting over the course of time resulting in Winky D standing the favor. It might not be surprising that the system is not popular to all the mass dancehall followers from different places.

Though it is lovely to celebrate our own in the top 10 it cannot basically be used as an international ranking system. We need to push our music internationally so that it can compete for real and be recognized. All the same Winky D has a great fan base locally as he is the only local artist entered!

The sensational Jamaican reggae crooner Christopher Martin popularly know as Chris Martin will be in the country on the 29th of April for his African Tour.

The show which will be held at the Glamis Arena has just been confirmed by the singer on his Facebook page through a promo video below!

In the show dubbed Together As One the Jamaican artist will perform alongside local artists who include Jah Prayzah, Winky D and Ninja Lipsy.

Martin has effectively been brought to replace fellow Jamaican reggae artist Jah Cure who was scheduled to perform at the same venue and on the same date.

A few years back Zimdancehall wasn’t seen as much of a genre but something to keep the unemployed youth occupied. This has changed over the years as we now see a few of our own being recognized by huge local awards judges such as NAMA where Winky D managed to scoop two of the gongs and ZIMA where Zimdancehall maged to scoop two, one for Winky D and another for Killer T.

Killer T walked away with the Best Dancehall Music for Ngoma Ndaimba and Winky D took the Song of the Year award for Disappear. The Zimbabwe Music Awards (Zima) hosted at the HICC last night saw Jah Prayzah walking away with the most awards, four in total.

Song of the Year – Disappear (Winky D)

Organisers for the Zim Dancehall Awards 2016 have released the nomination list ahead of the show which is scheduled for March 3 at Longcheng Plaza Mall.

Mbare based dancehall chanter Killer T real name Kelvin Kusikwenyu and Winky D (Wallace Chirimuko) have dominated the list in some of the top category such as Best Conscious Song, Best Artist Male, Song of the Year, Best Social Message, Best Collaboration and Best Album among others.

The two are not new to the battle as they have been nominated again this year at the National Arts Merit Awards ceremony which is taking place tomorrow at 7Arts Theatre.

Again the duo’s managers Brian Murukutira (DJ Bima) for Killer T and Winky D’s manager Jonathan Banda are to be honoured with the Excellence in Management Award.

Popular radio station Star FM’s Zimdancehall and sungura has been nominated in the Radio Creativity Award Honorary.

Speaking during a press conference held at the Joina City, show organiser Phineas Mushayi said preparations are at advanced stage.

“We are happy to see that the genre keeps growing and the dancehall stars are grossing a lot of income from their craft to sustain themselves and their families. So far preparations are at advanced stage and we have released the nomination which will see a panel of adjudicators deciding on the winners apart from some category which need public voting,” he said.

He said funding has continued to be a major challenge although with limited resources they can pull through for the quality event.
